Using and Creating Assignments

Updated at January 30th, 2022

Users with access to the management dashboard can create assignments using any room on TryHackMe.

Creating Assignments

To create an assignment, select the Assignments tab on the top. Once this is selected, select the New Assignment tab on the left.

Creating an assignment requires the following details:

  • Assignment Title - This field contains a title used to represent the nature of the assignment. This isn’t shown to the students but is used to find the assignments in the Overview tab.
  • Assigns To - This field is used to provide the assignments to a specific group of students. The groups can be found and created under the Groups tab.
  • Assignment Rooms - This field is used to select a room as an assignment. You can either select any room on TryHackMe or select a room that you have created.
  • Enable Deadline Date - This field is used to select a deadline for the assignment. When the deadline is enabled, If a user tries to access the room after the deadline date, they will be unable to access the room.
  • Brand Your Room - When this is enabled, the logo and avatar in the rooms will be replaced with the logo and avatar provided by the instructor. This can be changed under the Settings tab

As an example, we’ll be creating an assignment of the NMAP room with a deadline enabled to all the users enrolled in the management dashboard as shown below:

When the assignment is created, users will receive an email stating that they been given an assignment. This assignment will clone the room you have selected and give users access to this cloned room. After the assignment is created, you will automatically be direct to the page to manage the assignment

Viewing And Managing Assignments

To view the assignments you’ve created, select the Assignment tab at the top first and the Overview tab on the left.

To view information about a particular assignment, select the assignment from the list above. Once you select an assignment from the list, you’ll be directed to a page that follows

  1. The assignment share link can be used to distribute the assignment to users. This is useful when you want to present/distribute the assignment through written media like PDF documents and powerpoints.
  2. When creating the assignment, the room you have selected will be cloned. You are able to make changes to this cloned room by clicking the Manage button.
  3. To check the room from a users’ perspective, you can click the view button.
  4. This button is used to download a spreadsheet containing users’ progress. The spreadsheet will include the following details:
    1. Rank In The Room
    2. Username
    3. Score
    4. True/False value on whether the user got a question correct
  5. The table represents a high level overview of users progress in the room. You can use this information to determine whether users are performing according to a particular standard and gauge how well they’re doing on the assignment.

It is also possible to delete an assignment or update the deadline by selecting the action button on the top right:

By deleting an assignment, users will no longer have access to the room and you will not have access to the corresponding data:

Updating the deadline allows you to extend the deadline so that users have access to the room. It is also possible to remove the deadline feature so users have access to the room without a time constraint.
