What is the AttackBox?

TryHackMe's AttackBox is an Ubuntu Virtual Machine hosted in the cloud. It allows you to complete many tasks in our rooms. Think of the AttackBox as your virtual computer, which you would use to conduct a security engagement.

It is conveniently equipped with all the tools you will need to complete most of our challenges and is available in your browser with the click of a button.

What does this feature do?

Using this feature allows administrators to turn off the internet access for the AttackBox.Β

Why is this important?

We found that, particularly in Educational Institutions, some users are able to get around their Institution's filters by using the AttackBox to connect to the internet.

Example: An Educational Institution may have a filter that blocks its students from accessing certain sites, such as YouTube. However, by using AttackBox's internet access, some were able to overcome these filters and access blocked sites.

Where do I find this feature?

On your management dashboard, if you go to Settings>Preferences, you should see the option to Disable Internet access in AttackBox.

You can turn this functionality on using the toggle on the right-hand side of the screen, which will set this preference live.

Will this affect the usability of the rooms my users complete?

On the whole, the majority of THM's rooms will function as intended with the AttackBox in offline mode. However, there are a handful of challenge rooms that require the AttackBox to have access to the internet to complete the challenge.
