Troubleshooting Instance Issues on TryHackMe

On rare occasions, you may encounter issues when trying to launch or access a machine on TryHackMe. This guide outlines common troubleshooting steps and provides information on why your instance may be unexpectedly terminated.

Why Was My Instance Terminated?

You may receive a pop-up notification indicating that your instance has been terminated. This can happen as part of our cost-saving measures, which allow us to offer access to more machines and content across the platform.

Steps to Troubleshoot Access Issues

If you are having trouble accessing a room or machine, please follow these steps:

  1. Disable browser extensions/add-ons
Some extensions (especially privacy or ad blockers) may interfere with platform functionality

  2. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies
After clearing, log back into TryHackMe and try accessing the room again

  3. Terminate any active machines
You can do this via the Terminate Machine option in the room before starting a new one

  4. Disable any VPNs (including OpenVPN)
VPNs can interfere with the VPN tunnel or the in-browser attack box

  5. Restart the machine and wait at least 3 minutes
Sometimes, machines need a bit of time to fully initialize before they are ready

  6. Leave and rejoin the room
Click the Options button at the top of the room page, then select Leave Room. You can then rejoin the room and try again
