Fixing Windows VM Disconnections

How to resolve Windows VM freezing and disconnection issues using the built-in reconnect button.

Written by BigFawn

If you're experiencing a frozen or unresponsive Windows VM while using the split-screen view, you may notice a new reconnect button has appeared in the room interface.

Why does this happen?

Windows VMs can occasionally freeze or disconnect shortly after booting due to an RDP connectivity issue caused by a network change during startup. This is a known issue that our engineering team is actively working to resolve permanently. In the meantime, the reconnect button has been introduced as a workaround to help you get back up and running quickly.

What does the reconnect button do?

The reconnect button restarts your VM connection without terminating the machine itself. If your split-screen view freezes or goes unresponsive, clicking this button should restore the connection.

Which rooms have the reconnect button?

The button is currently available in the following rooms, which have been identified as the most commonly affected:

  • Windows Threat Detection 3

  • Windows and AD Basics

  • Windows Privilege Escalation

  • Windows Logging for SOC

  • Windows Threat Detection 2

  • Windows Local Persistence

  • Windows Command Line

  • Windows PowerShell

  • Windows Fundamentals 1

  • Windows Fundamentals 2

  • Tempest

What should I do if my room isn't listed above?

If you're experiencing VM freezing in a Windows room that isn't listed above, please reach out to our support team ([email protected]) and let us know. Your feedback helps us identify and fix additional affected rooms.

Is this a permanent fix?

No - this is a temporary workaround while our engineering team works on a permanent solution. We'll update this article once the full fix has been deployed.
