When to use TCP for your VPN connection

TryHackMe TCP VPN

Written by Blackout

TryHackMe’s VPN uses UDP on port 1194 by default. Some restrictive networks, such as workplace, school, or public Wi-Fi networks, may block this traffic and prevent your VPN from connecting.

If your VPN cannot connect on one of these networks, try TCP on port 443. This port is commonly allowed for HTTPS traffic, so it may work where UDP is blocked.

To switch:

  1. Select your VPN region.

  2. Change the protocol to TCP before downloading your VPN profile (.ovpn).

  3. Import the new profile into your VPN client and reconnect.

The Squawker VPN also supports TCP connections.

Use UDP when it works; try TCP if network restrictions prevent you from connecting. TCP on port 443 may help, but it does not guarantee access through every firewall.
