Troubleshooting Instance Issues on TryHackMe
On rare occasions, you may encounter issues when trying to launch or access a machine on TryHackMe. This guide outlines common troubleshooting steps and provides information on why your instance may be unexpectedly terminated or hibernated.
Why Was My Instance Terminated or Hibernated?
You may receive a pop-up notification indicating that your instance has been terminated or hibernated. This can happen as part of our cost-saving measures, which allow us to offer access to more machines and content across the platform.
Termination means the instance is permanently stopped and any unsaved progress will be lost. You will need to start a fresh instance to continue.
Hibernation means the instance is temporarily paused, with its state preserved. When you resume a hibernated instance, it will pick up from exactly where it left off.
Steps to Troubleshoot Access Issues
If you are having trouble accessing a room or machine, please follow these steps:
Disable browser extensions/add-ons
Some extensions (especially privacy or ad blockers) may interfere with platform functionalityClear your browser's cache and cookies
After clearing, log back into TryHackMe and try accessing the room againTerminate or resume any active machines
You can do this via the Terminate Machine option in the room. If your machine was hibernated, use the Resume Machine option to restore it to its previous stateDisable any VPNs (including OpenVPN)
VPNs can interfere with the VPN tunnel or the in-browser attack boxRestart the machine and wait at least 3 minutes
Sometimes, machines need a bit of time to fully initialize before they are readyLeave and rejoin the room
Click the Options button at the top of the room page, then select Leave Room. You can then rejoin the room and try again
