Planning for Success: Setting Goals Before Starting TryHackMe

You may have known for some time that you were going to purchase TryHackMe licenses, or it may be a very recent decision. Either way, there are a number of things you should consider before your licenses start and it is really important to develop a plan and consider what you are trying to achieve - this section will help set you on a path to success while giving you ideas for what to evaluate as you begin to use the platform.

You may think “Well, we are going to use THM for training of course”, but depending on your specific use case and goals, there are different ways to use the platform and different plans to think about.

The first thing to think about is your use case and determining what your main goal is when it comes to using TryHackMe. Here are some examples from clients we work with every day:

Team Development: Undertake a gap analysis to determine potential areas of weakness, and have an open discussion with your team to gauge their own opinions. You may also be using THM to onboard new starters and establish a baseline level of knowledge for the team.

Personal Development: Meet with your team members to determine their career goals and put a Personal Development Plan in place with them. You can then align this plan with content on TryHackMe.

Organisational Objectives: Are there any tools your company use that your team need to learn more about? Does your team need to understand more of what another team does? Do you need to improve performance stats such as MTTR?

Here are some additional things to think about that your Customer Success Manager will discuss with you during Onboarding:

What are your goals for the subscriptions?

Initially consider the first 3 and/or 6 months in detail, with overall goals for the first year.

How will you be evaluating the subscriptions?

  1. Usage metrics could tie into this, such as time spent, questions answered, learning paths completed

  2. Will feedback from the team be important?

  3. How about improved performance metrics or promotions?

These give you tangible things to work towards and will help you to evaluate your learning platforms.

Do you want to use existing learning paths or tailor the training specifically?

We have several pre-existing learning paths that have been curated by our content team to suit individuals with varying levels of experience, knowledge and aims.

Alternatively you can tailor these learning paths to make them more relevant to your business or team objectives, or you can create learning paths and modules from scratch.

We advise you to have a think about the above points in preparation for the start of your licenses, so you can hit the ground running from Day 1.
