Stuck On A Question?

Can't work out the next step in a room? Here's how to get unstuck, and where to ask for help.

Written by BigFawn

Getting Stuck Is Part Of Learning

Every learner hits obstacles, and working through them is how you build real skills. Chances are someone has been stuck on the same thing before, so the answer is often only a search away.

Before You Ask

  1. Re-read the task. The answer is usually in the task text or in a previous task of the same room.

  2. Use the hint. Many questions have a hint button (the lightbulb) next to the answer field.

  3. Check the answer format. The underscores in the answer box show the length and shape of the answer. If you think you have it but it's marked as incorrect, see My Answer Is Marked As Incorrect.

  4. Search for it. Look up the tool, command or error message you're working with.

  5. Take a short break. Coming back with a fresh mind often solves it.

Where Can I Ask For Help?

Ask Echo, our AI tutor. Echo is built into TryHackMe and can give you hints and explanations for the room you're working on, without leaving the page.

For help from other learners, the best place to ask about a task or room is our Discord community. You can also ask on our Subreddit.

Important: Our support team can't give answers or hints for room questions. If you think a question is broken, though, please let us know (see the FAQ below).

How To Ask A Good Question

Instead of just asking "can I have help?", tell people where you're stuck and what you've already tried. It saves time and gets you a better answer. For example:

"Hi, I'm stuck on Task 4, Question 1 in the Linux Fundamentals Part 1 room. I've tried x, y and z and searched for what I think the issue is, but I can't find a way forward. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!"

Community Mentors

Our community is one of the best things about TryHackMe, and learners love helping each other. Some long-standing members act as Community Mentors, guiding others through everything from connection issues to tricky challenges.

Mentors, like moderators, are volunteers and TryHackMe users just like you, so please be patient and post your question in one channel only. Mentors won't give you the answer directly, but they'll point you to resources so you can solve it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the support team give me the answer?

No. To keep learning fair, we don't share answers or hints. The community is the best place to get a nudge in the right direction.

I think the question itself is broken.

Please open the Messenger and select Rooms & machines, then My answer is marked wrong. Include the room name, the task and question number, and what you entered, and our content team will check it.

My machine isn't working.

See How to: Starting your first TryHackMe machine, or open the Messenger and select Rooms & machines.
